Australia Travel | Day Trips from Melbourne – Montsalvat, Eltham

I’m always on the hunt for new places to explore in Melbourne. Especially ones that get me out of the city and into nature. Living in the city is great, but sometimes you just need a little fresh air, greenery and cute animals.

This is a place I had never heard of and actually didnt know where I was going until we arrived, I had literally no expectations and didn’t know what to expect and honestly I was blown away.

I do think we came at the right time of the year, Spring really brings out the best of nature. From the purple trees to the plants just starting to turn green, from the ducklings and the baby peacocks, I was in the happiest place.

So what is Montsalvat?

Montsalvat is a Artist Community located about 40 minutes drive out of Melbourne City (via Train & Bus it is a bit longer and more complicated), its where you will find art in so many forms, or all forms. They run a lot of exhibitions, festivals, workshops and concerts. I would say that anyone from any age would find something they would enjoy looking at here. Personally, I am not hugely into art, however the grounds and gardens as well as the old buildings really made it worth the visit. There is also a restaurant on site which we will definitely visit next time.

Why you should visit?

It’s a great day out. If you book in advance you can book into various workshops such as puppet making, clay classes & many other artsy things. You can just sit and have a picnic in the grounds and wander through the various galleries… but really, I think the pictures speak for themselves.

Montsalvat is open 7 days a week 9-5pm (except various Public Holidays). It costs $14 per adult to get through (however if you go on a day where there is an event on, like we did, the cost goes down to $8 per person).
