What I have learnt about Goal Setting

We are already over a month into a new year and new decade! Already it seems to be flying by. Goal seeing is one of those things I get really excited to do on a fairly regular basis but the idea of 2020 made me even more excited and motivated.

And then… January was over and I had achieved nothing, well, I had started one of my goals (to attend 1 yoga class per week for those sitting on the edge of their seats) but none of the others. It is times like this where you wonder, Goal Setting, is it really worth it?

Over the past few years I have notice a shift in how people approach goal setting and ‘new years resolutions’ . There seems to be a lot of criticism and negativity around the whole idea. But why.. some people will say it creates unnecessary pressure on people to change just because it’s a new year, month, week or decade as it suddenly is. Some say we should be embracing a “New X, Same me” approach which basically is saying, just do you and keep plodding along as you are.

Now don’t get me wrong, I am all for this in some sense, accepting yourself, accepting what you do and how you do it for who you are is very important and isn’t something that I am brushing over… however as with everything in life, there are two sides to every coin and I myself tend to take the other approach.

New Year, New and Improved Me

2019 for me wasn’t my best year and I am happy to accept that and move on. 2020 coming along has been a great chance to reflect, not only on 2019, but the past 10 years before that since the time I left school (who can believe its been 10 years since highschool…).

My motivation for this decade to be the best decade yet, has definitely peaked early which I am so happy about and although some might say that goal setting shouldn’t be based on a date or milestone, there is definitely research that has been done showing that goals and habits which are started and set around dates, times, milestones or big achievements, are more likely to be achieved than those which aren’t.

So why not? I am taking advantage of the motivation boost and goal setting for the next decade and for the next year. I have a small diary to set smaller weekly, monthly and quarterly goals and if this is all you want to start with but just do it. No one is perfect, we can all improve ourselves in some way or another, maybe health wise, business, relationship, professional? So many options.

It is important to note that any goals that you make should definitely be coming from a positive and self improving place. If you are only setting certain goals because of what you perceive as expectations or wrong intentions then maybe reevaluate.

I thought I would start the ball rolling by listing a few of my own personal goals for the next little while, maybe this will give you a few ideas.

  • Write one blog post per week
  • Drink 2 bottles of water everyday
  • Keep more in touch with friends and family
  • Exercise 4x per week + 1 Yoga Class
  • Have days offline every now and then, maybe once every month
  • Read 28 books this year

This is just a few of mine, completely achievable if I put my mind to it.

All said and done, I don’t think there is anything wrong with a “New Year, Same Me” or New Year, New Improved Me” approach, you do you. Both have just as much value and both will work depending on who you are and what works for you.

The only thing wrong with either approach is criticising others who take a different approach to you.
